Junyoung Hwang, pianist

Junyoung Hwang was born in South Korea where he graduated with honors from Busan Middle School of Arts, Sun-Wha High School of Arts, and the Korea National University of Arts. He then studied at Texas Christian University with Dr. Tamas Ungar where he earned his Artist Diploma. Currently, he is a pupil of Dr. Pamela Mia Paul at the University of North Texas, where he earned his master’s degree in May, 2025, and is now pursuing his doctoral degree.

 

Mr. Hwang has received scholarships from Busan Middle school of Arts, Kyungsung University, Dong-Eui University, Busan Women’s University, Sun-Wha High School of Arts, Sun-Wha Piano Society, Music-World Company, Pone Classic Company, The Korea Herald, Korea National University of Arts, Texas Christian University (full scholarship) and the University of North Texas.

His remarkable talent has been recognized by many competition prizes. He was a bronze medalist at the Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition, and he won the first prize at the more than 20 competitions including the Korean Society of Music Education, Korean Music Association Competition, Seoul Music Competition, the Music World Co. Competition, the Korean Chamber Orchestra Competition, the Ye-Eum Classic Competition, the Busan Women University Music Competition, and the Kyungsung University Music Competition.

Mr. Hwang had successful solo debut recitals at the Busan Arts Center and the Scriabin Museum in Moscow, Russia. He also performed as soloist with the Bryansk Symphony in Moscow. In addition, he has given many solo and collaborative concerts at the Youngsan Arts Center, KCC Concert Hall, Sejong Arts Center, Young-Cheon Arts Center, Ulsan Arts Center, Geum-Jeong Arts Center, KNUA Hall, Yeonse Severance Hospital, New Delhi School of Music, Korean Cultural Center India, Universal Arts Center, The Studio, Seoul National University Concert Hall, PepsiCo Hall, Ed Landreth Hall, and the Laos National School of Arts.

Mr. Hwang has had masterclasses with distinguished pianists from all over the world such as Dr. Dae-Jin Kim, Yuri Didenko, Nakamura Hiroko, Miroslav Kultyshev, HieYon Choi, Jong-Hwa Park, Aviram Reichert, Young-ho Kim, Arie Vardi and Boris Slutsky.

Mr. Hwang has used his talents in volunteer efforts as well. He was selected as a pianist for the Korean Foreign Affairs Ministry’s ‘Dream Project,’ in which he visited India (2014, 2016) and Laos (2015) to work with students and other aspiring artists. He provided masterclasses, private piano lessons, and charitable concerts for the students there. During the project in India in 2014 and 2016, more than two hundred students came to the audition to take his piano lessons. The masterclasses and piano lessons were provided at the Korean Cultural Center in India, School of Music in Delhi, and National Music School in Laos, where he also performed concerts.
