The University of North Texas 2:00 Steel Drum Band  Mark Ford, Director

'Special Brew' is the latest CD from the UNT Percussion Department

The University of North Texas 2:00 Steel Drum Band directed by Mark Ford is a popular ensemble in the North Texas area.  The twenty-five-member steel band is comprised of undergraduate percussion majors at the prestigious UNT College of Music in Denton, Texas.

In addition to numerous tours and performances at music conferences, the 2:00 Steel Band has also been featured at Percussive Arts Society International Conventions.  Featuring two steel drum bands, UNT has been a leader in steel drum performance since the establishment of the UNT steel band program in 1982.

The University of North Texas College of Music in Denton, Texas is recognized worldwide as one of America’s leading institutions for preparing professional musicians in all fields.   As part of one of the largest music schools in the world, the UNT percussion program features a unique balance of traditional classical percussion combined with an extensive world music curricula.

As well as classical percussion ensembles, students learn by performing the music of Brazil, Cuba, Trinidad, India, Indonesia and West Africa.

In a memorable performance back in April 1990, the Steel Band joined the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in a concert requiring 312 performers. The composition, 'Prisons of the Mind,' by composer Henry Brant required, in addition to the full Symphony orchestra, two brass bands and two UNT steel drum bands. The UNT ensembles were hidden in the Meyerson reverberation chambers near the roof of the hall.
