Young Artists' Competition
About Vernell Gregg   About John Green  Winners in past years   Repertoire

Background on repertoire selection   For later - publicity shots

  Saturday, January 28, 2012

The Vernell Gregg Competition attracts entries from across the U.S. and involves a two-step process. In the first round, contestants are asked to submit a performance audiotape or CD. These are evaluated and a portion of the contestants were invited to participate in the second round where they perform live before a panel of distinguished judges.

The Competition requires entrants to perform compositions from a specified repertoire. Exceptions from the repertoire will rarely be granted. The Symphony looked at studies done by the College of Music at the University of North Texas that examined how repetitive motion injuries suffered by musicians can be mitigated by proper training in childhood.  As a result the the Symphony made changes to the Young Artists’ Competition.  More information

The Competition is supported by Texas-New Mexico Power Company

John E. Green Memorial Prize
The judges award the $1,200 John E. Green Memorial Prize to the Grand Prize Winner of the Competition.

The judges may award up to three Grand Prizes if warranted by the level of talent. If that happens, the $1,200 prize money will be split equally among the Grand Prize Winners.

In addition to a Grand Prize Winner, choose place winners in junior and senior categories.

A copy of the music must be provided for the judges. No photocopies of music will be accepted.

Awards
Grand Prize: Performance with the Lewisville Lake Symphony at the February Young Stars concert plus the $1,200 John E. Green Memorial Prize. Up to three participants may be Grand Prize Winners. Winners may be junior or senior entrants from any category. The $1,200 will be split between the Grand Prize Winners should there be more than one.

Place Winners: First, second, third and honorable mention winners may be named in both divisions.
