The program features a selection from
‘Mame’, including 'We need a little Christmas' and ‘The March of the Toys’
from Babes in Toyland. These shows started on Broadway and eventually
became movies. ‘Meet Me in St. Louis’, which includes 'Have
Yourself a Merry Little Christmas', took the reverse route and made it to
Broadway some 45 years after the movie was released.
Maestro Ming notes that five shows
currently on Broadway and one to open before Christmas, are adaptations of
movies so he is getting ahead of the trend and including ‘White Christmas’
from the Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire movie 'Holiday Inn' on the assumption
that it must be on its way to Broadway even if its taking its time.
The concert includes the Suite from
‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ composed by Andrew Lloyd Weber and Arcangelo
Corelli’s ‘Christmas Concerto’. Three centuries apart, the two highly
successful composers created impressive fortunes from their music. They
also share common ground by building major art collections. Weber has a
taste for Victorian masters and Corelli's collection included a Brueghel
and several paintings by Poussin.
