All
of the arts groups represented by the Greater Lewisville Arts
Alliance need action-oriented volunteers to thrive. Annually, each
group honors an outstanding volunteer who has given time and talent
generously with an Angel award.
Robert McClellan is the Lewisville
Lake Symphony’s 2009 Angel of the Year.
Several years ago the Symphony
needed somebody to act as Treasurer and Robert stepped forward.
Eventually he found it necessary to give up that role because of
the demands of his day job. Two years ago the Symphony again needed
a volunteer to take over the accounting responsibilities and Robert,
although busy with his job at a national high-tech architectural
firm, agreed to take on the responsibilities of Controller. In that
role, he was also asked to become a non-voting member of the Board
of Directors.
Robert combines accounting
competence with and a love of top quality classical music. He is
helping the Symphony be a responsible user of its financial
resources and has increased the level of professionalism in its
management practices.
Being reticent by nature, it has
been difficult to persuade the Houston born volunteer, to talk much
about himself. However, Symphony sources have discovered that he
has an interest in theatre as well as music.
He got the acting bug, according to
the sources, after playing Tiny Tim in an elementary school
production and went on to play Emile De Becque in South Pacific and
Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady in high school productions. He has
sung in various church choirs and in the chorus of five musicals
staged by the Lewisville Poco Mas Theatre.
Linda, Robert’s college sweetheart
and wife of 40 years, is another strong supporter of the Lewisville
Lake Symphony.
Said Diana McMillin, Chair of the
Lewisville Lake Symphony’s Board, “All our musicians are all paid
professionals. The business side is entirely run by unpaid
volunteers. Like all volunteer-based organizations it’s not easy
for the Symphony to find people to fit critical jobs. In addition
to the skill sets we need people who are committed to the
organization’s mission and goals.”
“We are pleased,” she said, “ to
name Robert McClellan as the Lewisville Lake Symphony’s Angel for
2009.”
