Vernell Gregg Young Artists Competition

Rules, Repertory, Application Form

Checklist: be sure your application packet includes the following:

The competition is open to all students in Grades 6 through 12. There is no geographic limitation.

Senior: Grades 9 - 12
Junior: Grades 6 - 8

Eligibility

Each contestant must memorize and perform a complete concerto from the approved repertoire list.

Students who wish to perform a concerto not on the repertoire list must receive written approval in the form of an e-mail from the Lewisville Lake Symphony's Music Director prior to the application deadline. This is unlikely to be granted. A copy of the approval e-mail must accompany the application.

Three copies of the music must be provided for the judges at the Final Round.

The repertoire for the competition is designed to fit the size and instrumentation of the Lewisville Lake Symphony as well as being appropriate for the ages of the contestants.

Divisions

The Grand Prize Winner will receive the $1,000 Bill and Grace Lawrence Scholarship.

Bill and Grace Lawrence Scholarship

Grand Prize: One winner will perform with the Lewisville Lake Symphony at the February 21, 2014 concert and will receive the $1,000 Bill and Grace Lawrence Scholarship.

The winners may be either a junior or senior entrant.

Place Winners: First, second, third and honorable mention winners may be named in both divisions.

The judges will designate a Grand Prize winner only if they deem the contestant worthy. If no entrant meets acceptable standards, no winner will be declared. The decision of the judges will be final.

Performance with the Symphony

Awards

Preliminary Round:
Contestants must submit a CD along with the Application Form (see instructions below), postmarked no later than midnight December 31, 2013.

Concertos must be accompanied by a keyboard instrument (live orchestral performances are also acceptable).

Contestants will be notified of the results of the preliminary round by e-mail.

The CDs cannot be returned.

Final Round:
A live audition before a panel of distinguished judges will take place on Saturday, January 25, 2014, between 1:00 - 5:30 PM.

Contestants will be assigned an audition time with a maximum of 20 minutes.

Contestants may perform any portion of the concerto during the allotted time.

The winner will be announced immediately following the judges' deliberations on the day of the competition.

Constants must supply his/her own accompanist.

The Grand Prize Winner will perform with the Lewisville Lake Symphony on February 21, 2014.

Repertoire

CDs should be in a format that can be played on any standard CD player (including portable and car CD players). Do not submit a CD that can only be played on a computer.

While contestants are not judged based on the quality of the CD, high quality sound makes a favorable impression.

How to label the CD:
DO NOT put your NAME, AGE, GRADE, or PHOTO on the CD.

A non-refundable fee of $25 must be enclosed with the application.
